This is a fantastic novel for comic book fans. Narration alternates between the villainous Doctor Impossible and the heroic cyborg Fatale. Together they give you both sides of the comic book equation.

Grossman gives some thought to how a superhero world might work but doesn't overwhelm the reader with details.

The end result is a lot like the classic book Astro City where comic book cliches are fleshed out and made new again.

Strongly recommend it.

Soon I Will Be Invincible A Novel Austin Grossman 9780375424861 Books Reviews

One of my favorites. On the surface, a sympathetic point of view from the super villain's side. It also explores the more likely dynamics of the inside of a team of super heroes much more convincingly than the Avengers, the Justice League, etc. as seen through the eyes of a newly arrived cyborg heroine. Comics have tried to get their scenarios more realistic for years, yet still offer very flat characters and interactions, except for some minor attempts at stress syndrome and fighting with a dark side. This book is more nuanced, both funny and poignant at once. It would help to have grown up on comics to fully appreciate it, but not totally necessary. Go for it.
Enjoyed this book as much as I have any book in quite some time. I'm a bit of a comic book nerd, but leery of super hero novels. I took a shot at this one and I am very glad I did. I like the presentation of super powered types in a 'real world'...they are real people with flaws and real people problems and concerns...without taking that over the top or letting that presentation become the point of the story itself. I enjoy first person narrative when done well, and it is done well here...across two different characters, even, who alternate chapters. This is a creative, enjoyable, fun, and sometimes funny story and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Give it a try!
This is a setting which was clearly based on the structures of comic books which have been running for decades, going through dozens of writers and multiple thematic eras and a huge number of dramatic upsets to everything followed immediately by a hasty return to status quo.
The world is full of heroes who win not because they are clever or lucky or good but simply because they are heroes.
The protagonist is a villain, who loses every single fight because he is the villain, is the smartest man in the world but never does anything particularly clever, and who can't even figure out why he does what he does. Everything he accomplishes is handed to him through dumb luck or the efforts of others, everything he attempts for himself falls apart, and yet he is considered the most dangerous thing in a setting filled with alien invasion fleets and time travel and extradimensional horrors.
The heroes are more interesting, and seem like people who you'd enjoy seeing more of the story of, but we only see a tiny snippet out of the middle of their development.

Ultimately, this book is good at what it does. The writing is solid, and it faithfully reproduces what it seems to attempt. If what you want is a novelization of an arc in the middle of a 40 year old comic series that you've never read any other parts of, as told by a sad middle aged man trying to take over the world, this is the book for you. But I won't be looking for the second volume any time soon.
An outstanding read. Grossman does a terrific job of getting the reader into the mind of a career supervillain and analyzing his motives. Docotr Impossible's reminiscences on his life and villainous career are by turns philosophical. sorrowful, bitter, and occasionally hilarious (especially in discussing a former partner in villainy, the rather goofy Pharoah). I'm not always a fan of first person narrative, but ti works wonderfully here.

The alternating chapters narrated by novice superhero Fatale are... not quite as interesting. The writing is good, but lacks the strong personal voice that makes the Dr. Impossible chapters so fascinating.

Much like the comics that inspired it, the book builds a complex world full of odd super-history, a clear pastiche of the "unverses" used by the major comics publishers. It's well handled and mostly used as background that doesn't impede the story.

Comics/superhero fans will wonder where this book has been all their lives. Other readers will still find an intricate plot and well-developed characters to enjoy.
