A couple of us picked up this map for our recent trip to Costa Rica (October 2015). We actually had two of these with us on the trip, which I guess it's great to be over prepared. We used this map right when we got to Costa Rica. We landed in San Jose and rented a car for the 9 day trip in which we traveled to 5 different locations in the country. We did get SIM cards when we got there so we could use our GPS on our phones for directions, but I wanted to make sure we would have a backup just in case. I really did not want to end up stranded in a foreign country on the backroads if there was no GPS signal. The ladies at the rental car place were able to show us on this map how to get to our first destination without issue. I love that the map is waterproof. We were there during rainy season, and depending on which part of the country you are in, when it rains, it pours. We were pretty prepared for the weather, but it was great to know that if we got stuck, we had the map and it would disintegrate from the rain. Another feature that we loved was the commonly used Spanish phrases on the back. For someone who failed Spanish 101 in college, this was a nice feature.Overall, price point is great, the map is accurate, and the waterproof feature is great. Great find and great product.

This map came in handy for us! We bought it to have as a backup just in case we had trouble with google maps on our phones. Well when google maps kept trying to send us down rutted out dirt roads that we didn't feel comfortable going down we had to bust out the map! We used it to backtrack a little and then take a highway route to where we were going. It's worth the price for a backup piece of mind while you are driving on less than ideal roads.
While WAZE is the go to app for getting around Costa Rica (everyone uses the app there) the problem is that WAZE includes routes that as not open to the public. Several times the best route on WAZE was a private one down small dirt roads. The map clearly identified small dirt roads vs gravel and or paved roads. Now a gravel road in Costa Rica is fine but the dirt roads get sketchy. This map saved us a lot of time and misdirection. Recommend highly.
My wife and I just returned from a weeklong vacation to Costa Rica and this map was extremely valuable. We tried to rely on the smart phone app "Waze" for most of our navigation but there were locations that we did not have any cell service which forced us to navigate the old fashioned way, by map. This map was much more detailed than the free map provided by the rental car company and showed touristy information such as hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. I would definitely utilize the Waze app (especially for city driving) but this is a great backup between towns. FYI, we traveled all the way from Arenal to the Osa Peninsula.
As a side note when renting our car, the counter rental agent asked if we wanted a GPS I told him that I planned on using the Waze app. He responded that Waze is how all Costa Rican's get around.
Koplin's map is what you want! Terrific map that includes major roadways that are not the main couple of highways in Costa Rica as well as city maps of many of the more populated towns. This is the map that Expats living in Costa Rica recommend and use.
Without this map we drove for 4 hours, with friends that have lived in Costa Rica 17 years and had lived on part of the road, which took us from west to east of San Jose but on a southern route around it. There were no identification numbers on any of roads nor town names, so we had to judge by which road looked in better condition to guess which was the "main" road to take. 2/3rds of the way through our journey, the altimeter read 5200 feet. We needed to be at 5400 feet, so we realized that we had taken a wrong turn and had to back track for 30 minutes. We asked dozens of people walking on the sides of the road for directions and the best that we could get was guesses.
On this map by Koplin that road was shown in red with several road numbers on it, which we could have used. By contrast, another Costa Rican map, bought within the last couple of years, showed that road as unpaved for half of its length though it has been known to be paved for a decade, and that map is published by a very well known organization internationally.
Koplin's map is the one that you want!!
The best up to date Costa Rica map on the market!
Shows all roads accurately & clearly.
Great detailed map of Central Valley.
Lots of town & area maps.Even bakery & supermarket locations!
Toll roads,waterfalls,national parks,hotels,active volcanoes,mountain heights & locations,,ferry crossings,road distances + much more are clearly shown.
Heaps better than National Geographic's Adventure map!
Big bonus....It's plasticated,so folding & unfolding 100's of times in past month means no tears & looks brand new.
Enabled me to easily plan our 18 day road trip to off the beaten track areas in C.R.
Highly recommend!
We should have bought this map before we planned our trip. We went there for our honeymoon and we had a blast. The roads there are, hmm, different... Street names are rare, but between local directions and this map we at least made it close to where we wanted to be. This has a lot of great features like where activities are located with specific icons, blown up areas of popular destinations, and as it says it is waterproof (great for a rainforest no?).
If we had bought this before we planned our trip it would have given us a general idea of what to do where without spending a lot of time online researching. First, let me say that while 3G and GPS signals are strong, we had more issues with the software and directions not being up to date (or correct for that matter) and it's good we brought a physical map as a backup. We ended up ditching the GPS and relying on the map only because it was easier and better. So, my advice, skip the GPS from the start and just buy this instead!
