Heir to the Sky Amanda Sun Books

Personal rating: 3.5..3.75ish (I CAN'T DECIDE, OKAY!?)

"I'm the Wick and the Wax, my father always tells me. I must burn for others, even if it means I will burn and crumble for those whose path I light."

This story follows a girl name Kali who is the princess of the Kingdom of Ashra, her father being the monarch. Ashra is a floating continent far up in the sky above the clouds of earth. 300 years ago, an event called the Rending happened where this section of earth was lifted up into the skies to protect the people from the awful monsters that began to inhabit earth.

The book begins on the anniversary of this event and during the celebration, Kali is forced into a betrothal to a neighboring floating kingdom. She is not too happy about this. Kali being incredibly curious about the world below her, she is constantly visiting the library in the citadel and reading about its wonders but no one seems to really know anything. The elders even believe humans are officially extinct on earth. Tsk Tsk.

One night while walking with her best friend and her basically now fiance. Kali ends up falling off the edge and tumbles far far below and she miraculously survives.

" "The earth. I'm on the earth. My world, my friends, my father... they're all high above on that floating continent. Completely out of reach."

I found this book to be so interesting. I've never read about a floating island in the sky and earth being this ancient world. It added this touch of dystopian element to a fantasy story. I also find that this book reads like a Final Fantasy game. I couldn't help but picture all of the characters like Final Fantasy characters and all the scenes in that type of animation that the games are in. In fact every time the main character would run into a monster, the Final Fantasy fight music would start playing in my head. It was too perfect.

I really enjoyed the story. It was super creative. Unfortunately though, I predicted just about everything that was going to happen. Every twist, every plot point. (even though the story was very simple) It left me very unsatisfied in the end because of this but this book oddly left a gooey spot in my heart because I still enjoyed it. Just wish some of it's flaws were polished!

"I will not be the wick and the wax any longer. I will be the flame, and I will light a new world for us all."

Heir to the Sky Amanda Sun Books Reviews

Very disappointed with this one - just didn't gel for me and it sounded so good
Nice concept, but with many practical flaws, and plot holes.
I loved Amanda Sun's earlier books and was excited to see this one. Floating continents seemed both odd and off-putting, though. However, I'm really glad I gave this book a chance. This was an amazing story of survival and hope, a story of learning how to be strong. I really really liked it.
A mixture of predictability and unpredictability. Sun knew how to mesh the predictable facets of this story and the unpredictable in a woven tapestry of an adventurous tale of hope, self-described, and revelation.
Good in ways but not in others. Some of it made no sense. Felt rushed in places. More details would have been good as how the world became so full of monsters.
While the descriptions of the landscapes were great and the idea overall was intriguing the portrayal of the charterers was a letdown. Personally I just couldn't connect to Kali, or any of the others. But I still found the concept interesting and loved the descriptions the author provided.
I found the book to be wonderful. Great action sequences, intrigue, and excellent characters. I could see the torment of Kali as she realized the truths and faced the challenges. She came alive for me. And the book brings to light that not all monsters appear as monsters. I enjoyed this book greatly and I'm a picky reader. )
