Alive Together New and Selected Poems Lisel Mueller 9780807121283 Books
Lisel Mueller's work is well known to poetry lovers. This collection won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1997. An earlier collection, "The Need to Hold Still," won the National Book Award in 1981, and Mueller's work has won numerous other awards. She is from the Chicago area, and I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing her read while I was working there. Her poems are warmly personal, and at the same time display a technical control and economy. Highlights in this collection are her poem about visiting her native Germany with her American husband, and her poem about hearing Alfred Brendel performing Schubert, where she comments on the intrusiveness of applause. Strongly recommended for those who love modern poetry, especially the work of writers like Stanley Kunitz or Denise Levertov.Tags : Alive Together: New and Selected Poems [Lisel Mueller] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Alive Together New and Selected Poems Lisel Mueller 9780807121283 Books Reviews
I ordered this collection after hearing Lisel Muller's "The Romantics" on NPR, and I am glad that I did. Many of these poems combine a freshness and originality with a an understanding of the world that is both scholarly and Dionysian at the same time. I strongly recommend adding "Alive Together" to your poetry library.
Should be a must read for anyone seriously studying poetry.
Extraordinary poems that fit my life like much needed gloves (cold hands). Good service, condition of book, etc.
Very approachable poems that are fun to read. I enjoy this book and selected it based on the one poem posted on writers almanac.
I heard a poem read by Garrison Keelor, then looked it up on the web and decided to purchase the book. I was delighted to find it and I haven't been disappointed. Ms. Mueller's varied background provides a lot of food for her poetry. After immigrating to the U.S. she gained a command of the English language and totally "gets it" while reflecting on her past. I can guarantee, you won't regret adding this slim book to your collection.
This book of poetry won the Pulitzer Prize. She writes about a variety of topics, which makes her writing so easily accessible depending on whatever mood you're in or what you want to read.
Her poetry about birds is particularly detailed and lovely. As is the poetry about her mother, about death, abuse, about relationships...I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. Support POETS, support your own imagination and dreams - buy this book -- add this to your collection or give it as a gift. The title poem, Alive Together, is superb. Some other favorites The Blind Leading the Blind, Why I need the Birds, When I am Asked, Things, Mirrors, Missing the Dead, and JOY.
here's a bit of When I am Asked
when I am asked/how I began writing poems, I talk about the indifference of nature.
It was soon after my mother died, a brilliant June day, everything blooming.
I sat on a gray stone bench/ringed with the ingenue faces/of pink and white impatiens/and placed my grief/in the mouth of language,
the only thing that would grieve with me.
RECOMMENDED!
A book of poetry to get even if you don't like poetry. Much like being part of a conversation with someone who has lived and experienced and has grown wise and forgiving. Beautifully and simply written, too, which is much more of an accomplishment than complex writing in expressing emotion.
