Time Reavers Jacob Holo 9781494266172 Books

Honesty compels me to admit that I didn't finish this novel. It sits about half read on my Kindle, purchased off the back of Holo's excellent "The Dragons of Jupiter" and a really cheap price.

But where "Dragons" was 18+ action sci-fi adventure, this is a Young Adult more-magic-than-science story about the perils and prevails of hitting adolescence and finding yourself both not quite fitting in yet also having an extraordinary (and secret) talent.

The talent in this case is the ability to stop time and therefore - and implicitly, you don't get a choice - engage as a foot soldier in the fight against the world munching Reavers. None of the abilities to stop time make a lot of sense, nor do the psi powers those foot soldiers have when time is stopped. There is a super vague analogy of how everything in Holo's universe works that references fast food items but like the (lack of) nutrition in said food, it's not a sustaining meal.

As with "Dragons", the protagonists don't get much downtime. This is literally page by page by page by page fight scenes with the enemy getting bigger and badder and more numerous by the minute. Which is pretty much why I put it down...as the dead baddies accumulated the degree of implausibility tripped my WTF threshold and it just became too annoying to read.

But I 100% get that I'm not the target audience. And given the clear moral sensibilities, strong sense of accepting outsiders, need to push through despite your own doubts, and our inner fantasy of being a superhero, I'm happy to recommend this to budding or recent to sci-fi readers.

Holo has not given us a nuanced, literary novel here. But it's a cheap read reminiscent of - but not quite in the same league - those E.E. Doc Smith books I read when I was in the YA bracket. Nicole Taylor is not a Lensman, but she certainly has the same fighting spirit and the threat to her universe is equally grave and no less dire than that of the Eddorians.

Time Reavers Jacob Holo 9781494266172 Books Reviews

This is an entertaining book written by a man who must have daughters. Multiple daughters. Who observes them every day. And then writes his books.

If you read the book you'll figure it out.

It's not the kind of book that makes you sit back and ponder the universe. However, it's a great vacation book to be read when you're relaxing and just enjoying yourself. Well worth the money, and it's good enough that I'll peruse the other books Jacob Holo has written.
Disclosure I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads first reads program. This has in no way affected my opinion of the quality of this work.

How is this an indie book?! It's been so long since I've read something that made me feel like my head was going to explode from shear amazing bookness(Yes, I know it's not a word, but this is the only way I can express how I'm feeling).

So, in no real order, this is what I loved

1. I'm amazed by how well this male author handles a female protagonist, and a teen female protagonist at that. Nicole is genuine in her motives and thoughts. She is a very likable character without being perfect, she is wonderfully realistic. Even though her abilities are supposed to be unique/special she never gets arrogant about it.

2. The fight scenes were executed well and very detailed. You have been warned, very few gory details have been held back. There's nothing wrong with this, but I know for some this isn't really their cup of tea.

3. The details are nice. There are some amazing uses of imagery such as "it's body flowed like a river of metal plates". All the creatures are unique and well described. Sound also plays a big role and is described very well.

4. Minor characters are developed well. I pretty much fell in love with Daniel. He's got this witty "Doctor Who" with a dark twist way of talking and handling things, or at least that's how I see it in my mind. He's awesome, but flawed, and he's the male love interest without being so gorgeous and HAWT he takes up half the book with his prettiness. Or maybe he is gorgeous... my point is, the romance doesn't eat the story like in so many YA books. Originality for the win!

5. The universe is a hamburger, by the way.

A good review has to point out bad aspects... right? Give me a minute...

1. Some minor grammar errors and awkward phrasing that an editor could clear up.

2. A few passages seem oddly paced.

3. I'm scared there won't be a sequel.... there will be a sequel, right? Please?

So, boys and girls, this book is (currently) only $.99 on the kindle store so at least give this a try, I think it's great, maybe you will too.

Also, a note This is a completely independent author and he seems to work very hard on writing his books and promoting them. I find that admirable, and maybe you could see that as a reason to try this book or his other work "The Dragons of Jupiter" which I intend to read soon, even though it's out of my normal zone (non-ya).
I have to say, this book isn't the type I usually go for. However, when it was recommended to me by a friend, I was interested and bought it for my . I really liked it! The character exposition is thorough without being blatant and the story really takes off from the very beginning, which prevents a good-old first-ten-pages-and-still-not-hooked ordeal. It's by no means a perfect sci-fi novel, mainly due to action that trips over itself at times and an unclear explanation of the heritage of the civilizations (which very well could be given a detailed run-through in any possible sequels), but I thoroughly enjoyed it and went back to it every night until I finished it. To me, it seems that it's definitely set up to become a series. I personally think a prequel would suit. One other thing that I had trouble with - there are so many reavers that I had trouble keeping track of what they all were. Hive lords (really effective description there, any tryptophobe would agree) and mantis stood out, but I kept having trouble envisioning juggernauts, creepers, and sentinels, etc. Definitely pick this one up!
